Word Letters - different reference number each time template opene

Using Microsoft Word (2003, 2007), is it possible to have a letter template
that will create an automatic reference number when a copy is opened?

I would like to have it so that when someone opens the 'letter' template it
will come up with the next number in the system e.g. 01/01/08_0001,
04/01/08_0002, 10/01/08_0003 (or just a number sequence).

The point of this is to give each letter an reference number that we can use
the number to refer back to it but have it appear automatically on the letter
(so there are no duplicate numbers).
