Word Keeps Crashing, .wbk file won't open

I was working on a document in MS Word 2007, which was part of the Office
Enterprise 2007 suite, when the program just stops responding. It's like it
goes to 'auto-save' or something and freezes. So you could wait an hour, and
nothing, or you could 'x' the program, at which point the Windows message
that the 'program is not responding' pops up and one has the option to choose
'end now' or 'cancel'. So I choose 'end now', the program closes, as it does
so a popup from Word shows up, says something about how it's not responding
and will try to exit. It finally closes. When it opens, there's no
'auto-recover' side tab. This is happening daily, and and I've lost
significant work a number of times because of it when I've forgotten to save
every 2 minutes. I have a new Pentium IV computer, so it's not the hardware.

So I go to C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Microsoft\Word.
Sure enough there's a backup file, ~WRA0224.wbk . It has a MS Word icon. I
double click it, and Word opens, but there's an error message now: "Microsoft
Office Word cannot open this file because it is an unsupported file type".
So now, I'm like @#&%!!!??? It creates a backup file, and then won't OPEN it
because it's "unsupported"???!!!

So I tried renaming the extension .doc, then .docx. It still won't open. I
try renaming the extension .asd. Nothing. I try opening it with the 'open
and repair' function, in ever extension I renamed it. Still nothing. So I
reboot, then try everything all over again. Still refuses to open the thing.

So I search for the error message on the internet. There's no solution. So
I try installing the file compatibility pack for Office 2007. Still won't
open the file. I check in the MS Knowledge Base. Nothing. I go to get
support, and they want me to pay for support for a NEW program that I just
purchased. I didn't have problems with the program until a week ago, before
that it was just fine.

So, someone, anyone, I would really appreciate any advice on how can I open
this file...

The file you are attempting to open is not a backup file of your work but an
orphaned temporary file.
If you have Word configured to save recovery information, the recovery file,
if available, should load automatically when you restart Word. If it doesn't
the document is lost.
Word does not automatically save the document or backups of the document,
though you could force it to do so with vba

I am still using Office XP pro, but I have the same problem that "Sue" has, but what I really want is to have Word 2007 work inside of Office as it should. The message says "now attempting to force MS word to exit". When this happens three or four times a session, I can't get work done. I want a real solution from Microsoft, not a request for money for help that is not on line, or even forthcoming as a patch. when the program is set to work and doesn't.
