word is not flagging blatant spelling errors

How do I get my new Word 2007 to actually flag spelling errors. I've tried
looking in the help sections, but I can't seem to figure out why it's not
catching them. I just got a paper back that I got significantly marked down
on b/c of spelling errors that I would have assumed Word would pick up on.
 
Click the Office Buton then click the Word Options button (bottom right).
Click Proofing in the left pane and check the settings in the spelling and
grammar section.
Do you have "Check spelling as you type" selected?
 
Select the text then click the language indicator on the status bar at the
bottom of the Word window. Choose the language you wish to apply and uncheck
the 'do not check spelling' box and the 'detect language automatically' box.
