Word inserts cursor on the current page

I scroll up or down in documents to check things, then hit a cursor arrow
button to return to my place in the document.

In Word XP and all other previous versions of Word, this worked, but in Word
2003, the cursor comes to whatever page is showing, so I now lose my place in
the document.

I would hate to see this made into an option, but I certainly don't like it.

Instead of using the cursor arrow, use the spacebar. This should bring you
back to where you were before (then backspace to delete it).
