Word help

All of a sudden I have symbols on my word documents and can't get rid of them
 
What kind of symbols? Is it always the same one, which sort of looks like an
inverse capital P?
 
YES! Along with arrows when I hit the tab key, tiny circles when I hit the
space bar, etc. How can I turn this of please???
