Word has slowed to a crawl

I just started on a new job - and I just got a new computer, loaded with Word
2002 SP3. I had the same program on the old computer that was here for the
first couple of days after I got here. Word has gone from its usual self to a
plodding turtle, and our IS guy is out of options. I can't scroll through the
document or make any formatting changes without the screen blanking out for
several seconds each time. This was not happening on the old computer. If
anyone knows what is going on, please comment. This is making me crazy.
