Word freezing

I am having a problem with Word 2000. Everytime I try to
open a file it freezes my computer, gives me a variety of
error messages, like I am dangerously low on resources. I
have tried rebooting, shutting off antivirus (using
msconfig) but to no avail. This is not a new installation.
I can open other office files, there isn't a problem on
other machines with my network, and I tried reinstalling
word. I thought about bad ram, but so many other large
files, and mutliple files will open. I have also ran
scandisk and scanned for virus' (updates downloaded
daily). Any ideas?

Many Thanks Graham, by renaming (then deleting) the
Normal.dot template it seems to have cured the problem. It
was 10 times the size of the new one created. It seems it
was corrupted.
