We have a Microsoft Word that when you start typing a line
the line turns black and you can't see what you're typing.
The background is standard white. I can't find a setting
to change this and I re-installed the software to no avail.

Typically this problem is due to your graphic settings. The most
common cause is that your color depth is set to 16 colors.

According to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303507, this is caused by
having the color depth set too low. The easiest fix is the one they describe
last (Method 3) -- try that before either of the other methods:

Set the color depth of your computer to 256 colors or higher. To do this,
follow these steps:
1.. Right-click an empty area of the desktop, and then click Properties.
2.. Click the Settings tab.
3.. Under Colors, click the setting that you want (256 colors or higher),
and then click OK.
4.. Click OK to the Windows will now apply your new desktop settings
message.

This sounds like a problem with your graphics card driver.
You might check the manufacturer's website for a new version
of the driver, download and install it and see if that helps.
