Can anyone advise me why my old WordPad files no longer open, I haven't
tried to open them for about a year, and the only thing that has changed on
my computer is the updates I have added as required, I think the word files
were originally saved from win98 but they still used to open when I changed
to XP home edition, when I do try to open them a small window opens saying

---can not load word for windows 6.0 files---

I have tried to open them with notepad and get some of the file but not all
of it.

Thanks ALP

If you are running windows XP with SP2, the WordPad's Rich Text Format (RTF)
converters are disabled by default. This means that files with the .doc or
..wri extintion that use the RTF converter cannot be opened by usuing WordPad.

If you do not have word installed here is a work around:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Wordpad
3. Right-click Wordpad, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
4. Type EnableLegacyConverters, and then press ENTER to name the new entry.
5. Right-click EnableLegacyConverters, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

For some reason Microsoft recommends that you turn off the
EnableLegacyConverters after you have completed opening the files you wanted
to open. This would be done the same was as enableing, but you would
replace the 1 back to the number 0. I have no idea why they suggest this, I
have never had a problem with having it always enabled.

REMEMBER THIS IS FOR XP RUNNING SP2 (OR Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC
Edition 2005 OR SERVER 2003 W/SP1)

Forgot to metion -- lets assume that the work around Microsoft suggest does
not work (it should assuming u have sp2), then another option would be to
download the trial version of Micorsoft Office from Microsoft, then install
it. This will allow you to open the RTF (WordPad) files in MS Word. Or you
can download any other type of word processor that supports the .doc or.RTF
extintions.

Well, notepad is a text editor, not a word processor.
