Word file there but "not available" / opened?

I'm having problems opening up documents under WORD. The files exist
(thumbdrive and or previously stored on hard drive) yet when I click them to
be opened I get the following msg with an ! in a dialog box:

The file __________ is not available

One cause might be the Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus, which should be
disabled.
