A user has a Word 2003 file that she is sending via a Lotus Notes attachment.
(Lotus Notes was not my idea) - Anyway, she can open the file normally via
Word, and attach the file. However, when other users receive the attachment
in a Notes e-mail (even if she sends it to herself), they are unable to open
it and get the following error message:

Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions.
* Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
* Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space
* Open the file with the Text Recovery converter

I have checked all of the above, and also searched the MS KB and downloaded
the Critical update KB828041, installed it, and that did now work. ALso
installed the latest Office 2003 Service paks to no avail.

How can we correct this problem? Any suggestions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Document Recovery

A user accidentally formatted the word document(REPORT.DOC) from her flash drive but a backup was in drive c: which was deleted during PC maintenance (quick-format) but managed to recover it. now when trying to open it displays the following errors

Hi, I am having the same problem with some Word files with Office 2003. I try double clicking on them in Windows Explorer and nothing happens. If I R-click and 'open with' word 2003 I get the error message.
What is the solution?
Thanks
Mick

Problem: you can’t open the file.
Solution: shorten the file name.
Alternative Solution: shorten the file names of the folders above it.

Possible reason for the problem: the Fully qualified name in Windows is 255 characters, therefore your file names need to be shorted and so do the folders above it.

Diagnostics: If it’s a Microsoft Word Document and you can’t open it by clicking twice on it in Explorer. Then try right clicking the document in My Computer (or Windows Explorer). If you only get these options (Open, Edit, New, Print, Open With..., Send To-->) then it’s likely that you have the ‘filenameiswaytoolongforwindowstocopmrehendsoshortenit’ problem!

You probably can’t move the file, or open it from Explorer, or delete it or do anything with it, except get frustrated and bewildered! Even better still, you might not get an error message either! It just doesn't do anything.

You probably find that some other .doc files in that same directory work fine in every way. The only difference is that your "weird file" has this problem.

Other things you might have noticed:
When I tried to open up within Open Office Write, I got an error message saying the file name is invalid. I could not rename it.

When I tried to open up within Microsoft Word, I got this error message:
"The full path of the file 'XYZ' is too long. Please try using the 'Map Network Drive' command to connect to the server to shorten the path."

How to fix it:
For example, if your directory looks something like this.
C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\folder\subfolder1\subfolder2\ReallyLongF ileName.doc

copy it to something like this
C:\subfolder2\ReallyLongFileName.doc

If that doesn't work try renaming some of the folders above it to something like "a" and shorten the name that way.
Eg. C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\folder\sub1\sub2\ReallyLongF ileName.doc

I tried to rename the directories above it to something shorter... and that worked!!!

Good luck.

Hi,

Go back to the basics and I hope it will assist you with this problem because I've tried and tested the solution works:

1. Right click the file concern
2. Select Open With
3. Choose Program (if WordPad is not already available there)
4. Look for WordPad
5. Click OK

If you don't want to repeat this process over and over again. Select "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" Check box.

[Some advanced features may not be viewed in wordpad but atleast you will have access to the content]
