Word does not automatically ask to save file before closing, why?

Word at one time always asked to save changes to a file before
closing..lately it simply closes without asking to save changes. I have
searched the help files to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

I am running XP Pro, Office 2003, Intel 3.2, 1 gig RAM, this computer is
used primarily for an accounting and consulting business, no games other than
Solitare.
 
Either you have acquired a virus (what you describe is a common symptom),
or, there are other symptoms you're overlooking, and it's possible that Word
has gone into reduced functionality mode (which happens when Word hasn't
been activated or when a trial version has expired). Update your a/v
software and scan. Also, check Help - Activate Product and see if it's an
activation/expiration issue.

Thank you so much for the advice. I tried both of those ideas and the
problem still exists. I am running Norton Internet Security if that helps and
I do keep it updated and the system scanned; having gotten a virus several
years ago.....enough said..
