We recently updated to the Microsoft Office 2003 Edition. We have Windows
XP. My daughter did the installation when I was not home so I don't know the
steps she followed. Our problem is none of our old word documents will open.
The message we get is The XXXX file is not available. The files appear to
be there, they just won't open. We've also been unable to save and open new
files. I thought maybe running the repair installation process would resolve
the problem but it has not. I'm at a loss and would appreciate any help.
Thanks so much!

Do you also have Norton AV? If so there is a known issue which can
cause the inability to open documents.

Open Norton and go to "Norton Options". In the Miscellaneous section
turn off "Enable Office Plug-in".

Thank you for the response. I have the Corporate Edition of Norton
AntiVirus. I did not find Norton Options, a Miscellaneous section or a place
to Enable Office Plug in. Do you or anyone have other ideas? I appreciate
the help.

We have Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition. I don't find "Norton Options" or
a miscellaneous section so have been unable to turn off Enable Office Plug
In.
Does anyone know anything about the Norton AV corporate edition or have any
other ideas as to how to fix my problem? Thanks so much!

Here's an answer Beth has posted in the past:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:
