My problem is that word documents take a long time to open when they have
attached templates. On their website, Microsoft recommended that I wait for
the next Microsoft Windows XP service pack that contains a hotfix for this
problem. Has such hotfix been included in a service pack as yet and if so,
which number?

When they say "... if you are not severely affected by this problem,
Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Windows XP
service pack that contains this hotfix..." what they are really saying
is, "if you aren't encountering this issue then please don't call".


If you are encountering the problem then you need to obtain the
hotfix:

I don't recall if this was rolled up in the Windows XP SP-2 patch but
you should still be able to obtain it if it wasn't. Just call
1-800-936-4900 and tell them you are calling to obtain the hotfix
described in KB 823372. They should be able to fix you up in a matter
of minutes.
