Word documents locked

Somehow I seem to have protected all Word documents from editing. On the
Tools menu "protect" is greyed out. If I create a new document the same
problem applies. I have the same problem in Excel. Any ideas how I fix this?
 
Have you activated Word? (Help | Activate Product) Or is this a trial
version that has expired?
