I have tried everything to get Word's document history to run again with out
any luck. Does anyone know the deep secretes of Word that might fix this
problem?

Are you referring to the MRU list on the Office Button menu? That is
governed by the setting for Office Button | Word Options | Advanced |
Display: Show this number of Recent Documents.

The currently open documents are listed in the Windows taskbar
or
You could add the Switch Windows command from the All commands group to the
QAT (Quick Access Toolbar)
The Switch windows command normally lives on the View ribbon tab.
The *recent* documents list shown whgen you click the Office button is
controlled by Word Oprions > Advanced > Display > Show this number of Recent
Documents. Set the number to something other than 0.

The button you talk about is grayed out. Is problem now out side of Word and
to do with XP?

If you have used TweakUI or the like to suppress display of MRU lists in
Windows, then this will affect Word as well.
