Word document being changed to a .dat file when sending as attachm

AT RANDOM, when I create a Word document and go to 'file', 'send' as
attachment, when my email box comes up, it shows that it is a .dat file and
not as Word .doc. Even when I have it saved as a .doc file, go into my email
first, then have it attach this .doc file, when it shows in my email, it is a
..dat file. This has done it a couple of times compared to the other times
when it does what it is suppose to do. Why is this doing this? I have gone
and posted to Word discussion group and they suggested I come here and ask
the same question. Any help out there would be appreciated. Thanks
