word attachment/.dat file

I am sending an email with a .doc (word) file attachment.
Various users are receiving the email with the attachment
converted to a .dat file. When they open it, it is all
binary code and unreadable.
Why is the word file being converted and how do I fix it ??
Please help - this is causing me tremendous trouble !!

Don't use Rich Text for your e-mail format and/or don't use Word as your
e-mail editor.

Could try zipping the file and sending it that way, or see if they can
rename it .doc *renaming probaby won't work, but worth a try* are they
using the same version of Word to open the file?
