Word Document and Publishing Changed Pages Only

I'm using FP 2000 and added a Word document to my web so that people can
download it. But every time I go to publish with the "Publish changed pages
only" option selected, it uploads this Word document again even though it has
not been changed. I added it to my web using Windows Explorer copy and paste
then made a link to it from a page. I'm wondering if there's a way to add
this kind of file using FP so that it recognizes it as not being changed.

The keywords are: "I added it to my web using Windows Explorer copy and
paste"

Open FrontPage and copy and paste it ( or import it ) into the folder in
FrontPage. FrontPage will then recognize it and create an entry for it in
it's hidden vti files.

The vti files are how FrontPage tracks what is updated and what is not.

I deleted the file and folder it was in then started FrontPage again. I went
to folders view and created a new folder then used the import function to
import the .doc file into the new folder. But I'm still having the same
problem. FP still thinks the file is changed and still uploads it.

PLEASE bottom post in this group.

It will always do that after you reinsert the file at least until you
let it upload the file once. That way the FP Extensions will consider
it a file with the current date.

Please forgive me but what do you mean by bottom post? I've been using
discussion groups for years and have never heard that term.

I am aware that it will upload again because it senses a new file the first
time after the import. But I've tried publishing several times and it still
uploads that file. I've been using FP for about six years and have always
been able to add files other than .htm or image files using Windows Explorer
copy and paste and have never had this problem. I produce videos and have
always used Windows Explorer to copy and paste those files into my web. And
during publishing, FP never re-uploaded those files if they were not changed.
It makes sense to do what you suggest and I will do that from now on.
But... the method you are suggesting is not working with the Word document
even when I repeat the publishing without changing the Word document. This
is the first time I've tried to add/import a Word document so I wonder if
that has something to do with it. The problem does not occur with other
files such as .mov or .wmv files.

Please DON'T bottom post. I just had to scroll down past 300 lines that
someone did not bother to snip out to see an answer that was 2 lines long.

This group has never commented on anyone's posting preferences before,
and I hope never will again.
This is not the place for top/bottom posting arguments, and both
methods have always been welcome here.

I may have shed some light on the problem. I created a folder using the
"Folders" view in FrontPage and imported six different kinds of files, each
with a different extension. The first time I published, all six files
uploaded as expected. But the second and third times I published (without
changing any of the files) only the Word document file was detected as having
been changed and it was uploaded again each time. So it appears that it is
indeed a problem with Word documents, at least with my system. I'm using
FrontPage 2000 and Windows XP. Is this strange or what? Do you suppose this
could be a problem with the way FrontPage extensions are installed on the
server of my IP?

Sorry Paul. Top posting is preferred in this news group and always has
been.

It varies by how dinosaurian the newsgroup is :p

Bottom posting (IMO) used to make sense - but that was 20 years ago.

Nowadays, most people that read newsgroups read the original message and
then go down the list to read replies. Add to that the fact that 98.7% of
all current usenet posters never learned to snip hundreds of lines to post a
reply such as "I agree!" to the bottom....

I would like to get this thread back on topic. Since my original post I
created a folder using the "Folders" view in FrontPage and imported six
different kinds of files, each with a different extension. The first time I
published, all six files uploaded as expected. But the second and third times
I published (without changing any of the files) only the Word document file

it appears that it is indeed a problem with Word documents, at least with my
system. I'm using FrontPage 2000 and Windows XP. Do you suppose this could be
a problem with the way FrontPage extensions are installed on the server of my
IP? Are there any other resources I may try to resolve this problem?

The five files were:
..jpg
..htm
..txt
..doc
..lwp (Lotus WordPro)

I did not have any hyperlinks in the Word document.
