Word Docs Automatically Convert to Wordpad or RTF

Fran

Documents I have created in Microsoft Word are showing up
as Wordpad files. When I open Microsoft Word then open
the Wordpad doc and try to save the doc as a Word
document, the doc saves as an RTF file even though I
indicate "Word Doc" under "save as type" in the "Save As"
window. Can you tell me how I can correct this problem? I
appreciate your help.

Sounds like you may have inadvertently set the file
extension default to .rtf from .doc. A file that is
opened is saved as the type that it was when opened.
Open WORD, on the Tools Menu, click the "Save" tab and
check your default setting. If it is not .doc, change it.
Wordpad can open .txt files (as well as .rtf files).txt
being the file format for some of Windows previous word
processing utilities like WRITE. Word Documents are
generally in Rich Text Format, because Word is very often
used as the Word Processor for html email. Good luck!

Make sure you've associated *.doc, *.rtf, with winword.exe. The
association for *.doc and *.rtf may be associated with wordpad
instead.

Best way to do that is use your Word or Office CD to do a repair of
Word. The association should be set automatically.

Thanks so much for your help. I suspected that it was an
association problem but couldn't find where in the control
panel to correct it. Each Word doc is set as a "word.doc"
doc in the Tools/options menu but still shows up as an rtf
file. Interestingly, my account is one of five my family
has in Office yet my account is the only one with this
problem. I have the office CD but have no idea how to use
it to fix the problem. Can you direct me?
