Word .doc attachments being blocked in Outlook 2003

Sometimes, but not all the time, *.doc attachments are being stripped from
e-mail. My guess is that it has something to do with the latest Microsoft
Office Outlook 2003 junk e-mail filter update,
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;894384&spid=2520&sid=global. In
addition, the fact that there was an attachment doesn't show up in the info
bar like suggested at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP030760431033.aspx .

It's sporadic since both yesterday and today I received an e-mail from the
same sender each with a single Word doc. The first one came through but the
second one was stripped. BTW, I am able to both see and open both documents
when accessing the e-mail on the web-based ISP site.

Your guess would be wrong, since the junk mail filter doesn't block
attachments but allow the rest of the message to go to your Inbox.

If Outlook is blocking the attachment, it will tell you. If you don't get
told, then something outside of Outlook is doing it.

Thanks but how do you know this for certain?

It doesn't seem to be an outside force since the attachment can both be seen
and opened on/from the website of my e-mail provider, uReach.com. It's only
when it comes into Outlook 2003 via POP3 that there is a problem.
Furthermore, Outlook does not even report the attachment ever having been
there. This only started happening after the most recent update for junk
e-mail. It also has happen to my wife on her exchange server.

Thanks again.

Because I've seen it and I know that the Junk Mail filter only moves
messages to the Junk E-mail folder or deletes them. There are no other
choices.

Outlook CAN block access to attachments, but it doesn't _remove_ attachments
and show you the remainder of the message. And if it does block access, it
tells you that's what it has done.

So, what do you think is happening?

My first inclination would be to suspect an add-in. Check Outlook's add-ins
(Tools>Options>Other>Advanced Options>Add-In Manager and COM Add-Ins).

Thanks, the only thing there is Outlook Backup that is not checked.

Have you disabled mail scanning by any anti-virus or -spam program you have?
If you have a firewall program that scans mail, disable that, too.

Thanks again.

McAfee Virsus Scan 9 scans e-mail but it did not report a virus and didn't
quarantine the e-mail or virus. No firewall scanning other than Windows XP.
What's really strange is that one came in and the other did not.

I told you to disable that. If you can't or won't take the required steps
to diagnose the problem, how can anyone help you?

Brian, sorry for the mis-understanding. I was letting you know the current
state. I have no problem disabling but how will I re-create the "problem?"

Thanks
Cliff

Have the person who sent the original message with the seemingly blocked
attachment to resend the message.

After uninstalling and reinstalling the McAfee software everything works
great.

Thanks for your help.
