Word changes my formatting when I backspace

I have had this problem all the time and I can't figure out how to get rid of
it. I have turned off all the auto-complete auto-format boxes I can find and
still word changes the font size and/or type when i back space. My current
case happens when I have a "free" paragraph in the middle of a numbered list.
I have part 1.0 then 2.0 then I have a non-indented non-indexed paragraph
for a picture and picture text then the list continues 3.0, 4.0, etc.

If I backspace the "free" paragraph deleting the carrage return, and merging
it with the 2.0 numbered paragraph it changes the whole paragraph to a
different font that is in neither original paragraph. I have reformat the
whole section every time it happens.

any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Did you change the font of the text? If so, how did you change it?

From your description, it seems as if you have changed the font of the text
without actually changing the default (style) setting. To change the default
font, you can display the Font dialog box, for example by pressing Ctrl+D.
Choose the desired font and size, and click the Default button.
