word changed to ascII- help

i have a word document that changed to ascII font and I can't get back. If I save it to a disc. it saves it in notepad- also in ascII font. how can i get this back in the original format?
 
Open the file from Word, change to an ordinary font (Ctrl+A to select all).
Pick up a font and Save. Word will try to persuade you to save as a .doc
fil. Just accept.

Make sure the Print Spooler service is started and that your
default printer is active.
