word becomes wordpad - why & how

How do I prevent word documents becoming wordpad documents and why do word
documents become wordpad when I attach them to an email.
This has only become a problem recently

Word documents NEVER become Wordpad documents. They remain at all times Word
documents. What is happening is that through a registry error the DOC file
format is currently associated with the Wordpad application rather than
