Word attachments in Outlook 2003

I d/l but have uninstalled the Word 2007 in my Vista Ultimate. I
re-installed the Word 2003 which give me the Outlook 2003. It is working OK,
but with problems.

The Windows Word attachments in my outlook do not open. I tried the file
associations in control panel but it would only set up Wordpad. If I try
Winword or Word *.exe file for association, it just does not show up in the
"open with" associations.

As it stands right now I have to save the attachment in 'my docs'
and start the word and open the attachment. It is so roundabout.
When I had XP, it used to work fine, but with Vista and word
2007 install of the trial version and uninstall, the new Word has caused
all kinds of headaches.

Also, in 'my docs', I locate the file, right click, open with, choose
default programs. Still, it does not show Word in the dialogue box. But if I
click on that document, without all this 'open with' associations, it loads
up in Word and I could read it. Strange........

What registry tweaking - if any - do I need to do to make this work?

Please help.

It is bad practice to open attachments from e-mail messages (though in
Office 2007 most of the potential problems have been eliminated) so the
current problem is probably saving yourself from your folly. See
http://www.gmayor.com/outlook_attachments.htm

You are unable to open attachments directly, because as you suspected, the
file association for Word documents is wrong - probably because you
uninstalled 2007 and 2003 did not manage to correct its registry entries.

First ensure that you don't have the norereg key in the registry as
described at http://www.gmayor.com/Toolbars_in_word_2007.htm

Then repair Word from its help menu, which should reset the registry
assignments (or see 'How to re-register Word when problems crop up opening
files' http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm )

If that doesn't fix it, from Windows Explorer, right click a doc file and
select Open With > Choose Program. If Word is not listed as one of the
recommended programs, use 'browse' to navigate the C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\winword.exe, then check the 'Always use the
selected program to open this kind of file' check box before OK-ing out of
the dialog.

I have not used Vista, so cannot say - however if you have not added the
registry entry, it won't be there.
