Word as editor does not load

many times while replying to an email, it will lock and says that outlook is
loading winword as the email editor and it never does. It just locks and i
have to reboot to get it to work - maybe. I have upgraded to outlook 2002
from XP home and now have business 2003 and it makes no difference. I even
requested it remove previous installations. There seems to be plenty RAM so
this will not happen, and I am lost. Please offer a suggestion
