Word and footnotes

When I insert a footnote in Word whilst working in the Normal view it works
great. Then I close the footnote window at the bottom of the screen and I'm
taken back to the first page of the document, rather than where I inserted
the footnote. This has been going on since 97 (now using 2003). What possible
purpose does this serve? It just means I have to find my place again, which
might be dozens of pages further into the document. Showing or hiding
footnotes should have no effect of where I am currently working in the main
document (unless I deliberately select an earlier or later footnote, in which
case it should take me to that page of the main document).

It maybe time to start with a fresh new Word document. If you can, copy all
and paste special into a new Word document. You may also find that the file
size will be a lot lower and the document loads and saves a lot faster.

This isn't happening when I test this theory. You may have a corrupt
document. However, if this always happens as you say...you might try
moving to Print Layout view to see if what you think you're seeing is
really what you are seeing? Normal view can sometimes seem
confusing...whereas layout view shows you WYSIWYG view (what you see
is what you get).

Good luck...

I don't experience this, either, except when I inadvertently click the mouse
in another footnote.

One additional note...if you do appear to be at the top of the
document...hit Shift + F5 and you'll instantly go back to the last
edit location. See if that makes a difference. If not...then you may
not actually be moving around as you thought????
