Thanks David and DL - my CDs are formatted with InCD4 so that they act as large floppies
Worked perfectly with my old machine using Word and Excel, on Windows 95 and ME. Seems that my software is not compatibility with XP. Any further comments?

What happens exactly. Answer to this thread. Don't start a new one.

Firstly, one should never write to floppy with word (not sure about Excel). Word is a database (of paragraphs ands formatting). Everything is stored on disk and edited on disk (as opposed to notepad which the file is read into memory and edited in memory then written to disk on a save). So word needs to constantly write to the file (it reads 64 K of text into memory in a cache and 1 meg of graphics). It tends to write all changes to the end of a COPY of the current file. It renames this file to the original name on a save (and compacts it depending on settings).

In short using word on a floppy won't work unless conditions are just right. And it's slow.
