Word 97 XPHome

I've recntly loaded Word 97 onto a new laptop.
Lately, when I open a document I get the message
"C:\...\(file name)is being used by (my name).
Do you want to make a copy." Why is this happening?
Did I inadvertently add some networking option
on the system? I would appreciate any suggestions.
