Question: I send home documents from work. Both my work and home computers'
OS is Windows XP. However, the work computer is Word 97 and home is Word
2002. Often times I cannot open the document sent from work to home, but
never the opposite. Does it have anything to do with work's firewall? Is
there a download fix for this somewhere? Thanks.

What do you see, more exactly, when "it doesn't work"?

It's possible that the Word 97 document is damaged in such a way that Word
2002 can't open it. But it's hard to be sure where the problem is. Certainly,
it's a very good idea to ZIP a Word file before emailing it as that provides
some protection against "garbling" during transmission.

You may also need to have Word 97 generate a "clean" copy of the Normal.dot
template (do that by renaming the current copy, then starting Word).

I can't remember the exact wording, but is says something to the effect of
that it cannot open this file and to "click here" to go to the internet to
find the program to open it.

So you're trying to open the document directly from email, or by double-clicking
it in Windows Explorer? What happens if you start Word, then use File/Open?

The same thing. I even tried saving it to my hard drive and opening it from
Explorer. Same thing.

You see a dialog box that prompts you for which program to use when you go
over File/Open from within Word? I don't think I've ever seen anything like
that. In my experience, Word will either prompt you for the encoding, or it
will tell you it can't open the file. It makes no sense that it asks you to
use a different program to open the file.

Try again and this time give us the exact text in the message you're seeing.
