Word 97 document not a valid win32 application

When I try to open a Word 97 document by clicking on it, I receive the
message that it is not a valid win32 application. The only way I can open it
is by right clicking the document, going to "opens with" and clicking Word
97. What is causing this and how can I correct it? I did not originally
experience this problem.

There must be something wrong with the association. Select one of the
offending documents, then shift-right-click it, and choose
"Properties". Click the "Change ..." beside "Open With". Now you can
tell the OS to use Word to open these files.
