Whenever I see someone write "surely there must...", my first thought
is, "Not in Word, there isn't!"
The AutoText is stored in the template, but not in any format that you
can get to without either the dialog or some macro programming.
Fortunately for you, I've done the programming. Go to
http://jay-freedman.info and download two files, AutoTextDumper.zip
and AutoTextLoader.zip. Unzip both of them into your Templates folder.
Open AutoTextDumper.dot first, and click the button on the floating
toolbar to run its macro. That dumps the existing AutoText entries
from any of your templates into a table in a document. You can save
the document as a form of AutoText backup, print it, edit it, or send
it to another computer.
After you've edited the entries in the document, open the
AutoTextLoader.dot template and use the button there to run its macro.
You tell it what document contains the entries and which template to
put them into.
