Word 2010 and Text Files

Our state office switched from WindowsXP to Windows7, and
from OfficeXP to Office 2010.

When I attempt to open a plain-text document in Word, I get
a message that Word has encountered errors and shut down.

Our IT dept. contact verified the problem, and concluded
that Microsoft Word has dropped support for text files.

That would seem like an almost suicidal move for the Word
developers, and I find it highly unlikely.

What say ye?
 
Opening *.txt files works perfectly fine on my system (Office 2010 and
Office 2013 on Windows 7).

Try repairing your Office installation.

I relayed that info to the IT department, and the reply has
been... silence.
