WORD 2007

Susan

I have created a database of names and postal addresses within WORD 2007 on
my XP computer. I now have a new Vista computer and wish to transfer this
database over as a workable database not as a WORD document. Can anyone tell
me please if it is possible to do this? I have tried a memory stick, but once
transfered the database will only open as a one page WORD document.

Thanks

Susan.

AFAIK Word doesn't make databases. In MS Office, Access makes databases.
If you saved the original file as a .doc file, you'll get a Word
document. You'll get help from Word experts if you post in its newsgroup
instead of here since this isnt an operating system issue but an
application (Word) issue.

Word is a word processor. I don't have 2007, but I can't think that you
could create a database in it.
Access is the MS database program.
If you created a Word doc, it will stay a Word doc.

Thanks Dave for writing. I have not found the answer yet to my problem. To
refine things a bit - In WORD 2007 they have a bar at the top which they call
a ribbon,on the ribbon there is a tab which says mailing. I went into this
tab and from there selected, mail merge, I selected the label size required
and then made a large list out of names and postal addresses. Once completed,
within the ribbon at the top I can then touch the arrows either left or right
and the names and addresses will move position on the page so that I can have
a whole A4 page of different names and addresses to print out. This is what I
thought was a database. It was created on an xp computer and works fine, but
when I take it over to vista it will only show the first sheet of labels.
The arrows on the ribbon do not light up for me to move the names and
addresses.

Thanks

Susan.

Just thought of another way of putting this question. In WORD 2007 I created
a mailing list on my xp computer and this works perfectly, giving me many
pages of A4 labels, each label containing a different name and address. When
the mailing list is moved via a memory stick to vista the list will only open
as a one page list of labels.
Is this called a database or simply a mailing list? Can anyone advise me how
to successfully move this over to my vista?

Thanks again
Susan.

Like I said, I don't have Word 2007...
It looks like you didn't load an existing data file containing contacts, so
you entered them.

According to
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA101091611033.aspx
these should have been saved to a .mdb file. Which is a database, I guess.
I assume you copied this file over, as well as any other documents from XP.

You may have to inquire in a Word newsgroup about why it's not working....
If you copied the files over to Vista via a CD, you may have to change
permissions or make them non-read only.

No need to worry about language too much.

A database is a collection of data, and is often managed with Database
Software such as Access, but it doesn't have to be.

Your data was added to a Word document, probably as a table, and should have
been saved along with the original document to which you merged the data.

It's possible you didn't save the data document along with the merge
document. They were separate, and Word should have nagged you to save it.
You will have to copy both over to the new machine to get what you want.
But, if you had saved the merge document only, and then shut down Word, it
should have asked if you wanted to save the data document as well. You may
have thought that you had already done that, and said no. If so, you'll have
to enter it all again.

Good luck

Hi, Susan.

Excel makes databases, although it doesn't call them that.

I've not worked with them in years (several versions ago), but Excel
spreadsheets can be converted to Access databases - and vice versa.

As Malke said, this question would have the best chance for a good answer in
an Office newsgroup.

Thank you to everyone for their kind help. I finally decided to type a new
data list on my Vista computer with Excel and everything was going
wonderfully and as it was almost finished I thought I would check one or two
post codes from my Contacts folder on the Quick Launch toolbar. My Contacts
folder was gone and the Contacts shortcuts folders were empty. I am now at a
point that the Contacts shortcuts folders will not open. I cannot open it
from the programmes menu on the start menu either. I decided to do a system
restore but each time I do it the computer tells me that restore was
interrupted and could not be restored.
Can someone tell me how to get my Contacts folder back. I could
import/export all my names and addresses from my address book in xp, if I
could just open the blasted Contacts folder H E L P. Thanks Susan.

FILE AND THEN IMPORT MY CONTACTS FROM ADDRESS BOOK ON MY XP COMPUTER TO
VISTA. I ALSO FINISHED ALL MY EXCEL MAILING LIST SO EVERYTHING IS SORTED.
THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THEIR HELP.
