Word 2007 Styles Missing from Style Ribbon

The Styles tab section of the ribbon has a set of icons representing a subset
of the styles in use. Its missing about 50% of the styles that I use most
often. On the other hand the Styles list is accurate so I can always find the
one I need. The question is, why does the Style ribbon take up so much space
without providing a usable function? Is there a way to make it accurate?

Yeah, I've been using Word 2007 exclusively for 3-4 weeks, and I'm getting
annoyed that everytime I open a document, I have to tell Word all over again
to SHOW the styles I want to be shown. Is there a way to turn on particular
styles so that their default setting is always SHOW instead of HIDE?? Thanks.
