I am using Word 2007, and have yet to see any indication that spell check is
highlighting errors as I type. Additionally, the spell check seems to ignore
obviously incorrect spelling when I run spell check. Words that it has
ignored include "outdoo" and "comitted". I have been generally unhappy with
the 2007 edition of office, but this is insane.

Spell check issues are a common complaint with Word 2007. The first thing to
check is if the registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0\Override" exists and if it does delete it.

no such registry key exists. It seems to be only part of the document not
being checked. In my essay so far, which the word count button reports is 550
words long, the spell check only reports 200 words. I tried the "recheck
document" option in the options window, but it had no effect.

Maybe part of the document has accidentally been marked "Do Not Check
Spelling Or Grammar"? Select the whole thing (Ctrl-A) and be sure that
option isn't chosen.

Or maybe part of it is marked for a different language. Again, select
the whole thing and choose whichever variety of English you use.

Graham,
Thank you for posting this solution. I've been pulling my hair out for may
months, uninstalling, reinstalling, repairing, and now, my spell checker
works due to your solution.
