auto spellcheck not working in 2007

Can anyone tell me why auto spellchecking is not working when I open a Word
2003 document in 2007? My options are set up to spell checking as I type.

Also, does the spell check work in headers and footers in Word 2007?

Open the document that has this problem, click on Office Button | Word
Options | Proofing | uncheck the boxes for "Hide spelling errors in this
document only" and "Hide grammar errors in this document only" | OK.

Word 2007 spellchecks headers and footers like Word 2003 does.

I tried this and nothing happened. I even reloaded word and still autocheck
will not work while I am typing. What do I do next? Help?

Thanks! However, it does matter what document I pull up or if I start with a
new document, auto spell check will not work, Only grammar style does. What
next?

1. Verify settings in Word 2007:
a. Open a document that has this problem. Press Ctrl+A to select
all of the text.
b. Click on Review tab | Proofing: Set Language | <choose your
language> | uncheck the "Detect language automatically" and "Do
not check spelling or grammar" boxes | Default | OK.
c. Click on Office Button | Word Options | Proofing | check the
"Check spelling as you type" and "Check grammar with spelling"
boxes | uncheck the "Hide spelling errors in this document only"
and "Hide grammar errors in this document only" boxes | OK.

2. If the previous suggestion doesn't help, then in Word 2007
click on Office Button | Word Options | Add-Ins | Manage:
Disabled Items. If you see any disabled items that relate to
spelling, try enabling them.

3. If the previous two suggestions don't help, then:
a. Close Word.
b. In your Windows registry, if the key
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing
Tools\1.0\Override" exists, delete it.
c. Restart your computer.

Thank you. This happens to me periodically. Just wish I knew what causes
it. Your response is a huge help.

I do not know how to get to the window registry... can you help please??
Also, I had an older version of windows on this computer, and then loaded on
the office 2007... will that make a difference?
THANK YOU!!!

To start the registry editor, display the Run dialog box (for example by
clicking the Start button and then Run). Type regedit and press Enter.

Excellent listing of fixes. Looked over each and found the last to be the
fix that we needed. It seems someone prior to my arrival at my current
company unknowingly set a disable on the spelling check add-in and it carried
over when they built the install script and stayed even after a
uninstall-restart-reinstall process.

Thanks!

Do you know why the hide spelling errors checkbox is checked and greyed out
so that it cannot be changed? This is what is happening in Word 2007 for me.
