Word 2007 proofing options

Why are some of the proofing options grayed out? For example, the Mark
Grammar as you Type and Show Readability are grayed out and are not checked.
Also, why does Spelling and Grammar checking "turn off" when I start a
document?I do not have any exception checked for the current or new
documents, but when I start typing in a document it changes the exceptions to
checked (hide spelling and grammar errors) and grays it out. Did I miss
something during installation?

Thanks!

I looked at some other machines and they don't have the same issues, so it
must have been an installation problem. I'll just reinstall the program.

Okay, I uninstalled and reinstalled twice and it still has some those options
grayed out? Any ideas?

Thanks

My initial guess is that your text is not marked as English (US) and is
instead marked in a language for which there is no speller or grammar
checker. Can you select your text and check the language of it? It should
be showing in the status bar. If not, you can go to the Review tab, Proofing
group and click the Set Language button and see which language is selected in
the dialog.

You may need to change your default language for documents and turn off the
"Detect language automatically" setting in the Set Language dialog.
