Word 2007 on Vista getting mouse cursor to enter text of Word docu

When I open a document in Word and viewing the text, I can move the page
cursor up and down and right and left by using the direction arrows, however
if I try to click to a spot within the text using my touchpad the cursor
disappears once it travels into the text space. The cursor functions on the
toolbar and the dropdown menus. I did go to my files and remove normal.dotm
file and now I can open any document without first opening Word 2007. But
the touchpad cursor is still disengaged from the text of the Word 2007
document. I tried going to the Office Button in the upper left of the screen
(next to save icon) I did get the drop down menu using the mouse-click and
did get further to mouse-click on the WordOptions button at the bottom of the
menu screen, the WordOptions menu appeared However the screen is frozen in
the Popular tab and I cannot access any of the other tab-buttons of the menue
including Resources, where I think I can address the status of the touchpad
mouse-cursor with the Word 2007 program. The cursor device works fine in all
other software programs (Publisher, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, (etc) I think
there is a setting that must be corrected, just don't know what it is. I did
Uninstall Office2007 and Reinstall it, but the problem persists. I wonder if
there is a Temp file that need be deleted or replaced. Thanks for the help
and your time. BriteRay
