Word 2007 on 64bit Vista Hang on startup

Vista Ultimate 64bit, Word 2007 (cannot find about box but i think it is 32
bit Word)
2.5 gighz 64 bit CPU
2.5 gig RAM
4 gig ReadyBoost

This is a very fast machine, Visual Studio 2005 just pops up as an example.

1 - I have cut and pasted many things into a document.
2 - Now the document hangs for about 20 seconds when trying to load the
document.
3 - I have cut the document into 11 documents, about 50k each.
4 - The documents have internal links, the ones that came with, EX: MSDN
HTML article.
5 - Now each of the 50k documents take the same 20 seconds to load.
6 - It appears that there is network activity, based on the system bar at
bottom of the Vista desktop
7 - If i delete all of the content with the links it launches fast again.
Remember each of these 11 documents all do the same thing, and each of them
have different types of content within them. Ex: tables, or links, or just
general formatted text.
Question:
(1) - What could be causing this to hang this way. Is Word verifying all of
the links or something. It hangs like when the printer is off-line.
(2) - Are there any tools that can determine what steps Word is doing during
startup, sort of a trace or debugging steps, etc?

It is probably updating the links - check Word Options > Advanced > General
or it could be looking for an attached template that is not where it was
originally
or it could be a virus checker add-in (Norton AV's office plug-in is
notorious for such hangups).

Thank you for your reply Graham.
I tried your suggestions and it didn't seem to resolve my problem.
My Vista does not have any Virus protection.
I saved it as a Word 2003 document and saved it to an XP machine.
I clicked on the file from XP, Word 2003, and it just popped up like i was
used to.
It seems to be something with either Word 2007, Vista, or a combination of
both.
I also opened the Word 2007 version with Word 2003, it did the conversion,
and popped up fast.
The XP machine is a slower 1.8gighz machine with 1.5 gig RAM
The Vista machine is a 64bit 2.5gighz with 2.5 gig RAM & 4 gig ReadyBoost USB.
If you want me to attach the file i can, but there is nothing special about
the content. It is a cut and past from some AJAX documentation that came with
the AJAX download.
ex; 1.2 Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX Offline Documentation
This download contains the official offline documentation for Microsoft
ASP.NET AJAX version 1.0, which was released in January 2007. The same
content is available online at http://ajax.asp.net/docs/.
Just hit the site above, copy the stuff into Word 2007, and watch it "White
Screen" in Word 2007. The screen goes all white while it does whatever then
returns. IT says "Word is not repsonding" in the caption bar while in the
"White Screen"

I'm ok with all of this, i just wanted to forward it to the Office Team as
an example of something that seems to need some attention.
Again, i can help you if you want to try additional things, just let me know.
My email address is (e-mail address removed) or (e-mail address removed).

Thanks again for your response Graham.
