Word 2007 Create Outline numbered styles

K

Kylie

OMG ~ please tell me I am a total blind bat!!!

I am trying to create my own numbering without using the heading styles so
it looks like below:

1. first level (would like to name style as numpara1)
1.1 second level (numpara2)
1.1.1 third level (numpara3)
1.1.1.1 fourth level (numpara4 etc)

However, when I go to create a style and set the numbering to it there is no
outline numbered tab like in Word XP.

There is however a Define New Multilevel List and Define New List Style. If
I define a multilevel list, how do I assign each level a style?

When I copy the styles from an old Word XP document the numbering falls out
completely so I can't even cheat and bring them over.

Any help would be appreciated.

To create a new multilevel (outline-numbered) list in Word 2007, use Home
tab | Multilevel List | Define New List Style. Word shows the style dialog
box for a list style, and you can define all of its settings if you click
Format, Numbering; this displays the Modify Multilevel List dialog box which
allows you to set numbering formats and assign paragraph styles to levels,
similar to the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box of previous
versions (and the description of the dialog box at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html is still
useful). Note that you may have to click More to see all options of the
dialog box.

You can apply the list style to text via Home tab | Multilevel List (list
styles are found, not surprisingly, under "List Styles"). But if you
assigned paragraph styles to each level of numbering you'll find it easier
to apply the appropriate paragraph style.

To edit a particular list style, click Home tab | Multilevel List. Then
right-click the list style and choose Modify from the context menu; this
opens the Modify Multilevel List dialog box.

For what it's worth, you can still reuse your old list. Just open the Word
document that uses it, save it under a different file name (to preserve the
contents of the original file) and then edit it. To change a multilevel list
created without list styles, just place the insertion point in the first
top-level paragraph (for example, in the first Heading 1 paragraph if you
are dealing with heading numbering). Then click Home tab | Multilevel List |
Define New Multilevel List.
