Word 2007 cannot find a file another user has open

Instead of giving me the option of opening a read only document, often times
Word 2007 is giving me an error message stating that it cannot find the file,
and I should make sure I typed the path correctly - when another user on our
network has the file open. The path is correct. I can find no consistency
to this problem, its not confined to certain files or certain users.
Sometimes a file that I was able to open will give me the error message, and
vice versa, with no apparent logical reason.

Any thoughts are appreciated.
