Word 2003 slow to start

Brand new PC with Vista Home Premium installed - I've loaded up Office 2003,
and PowerPoint and Excel work like a dream. Word, on the other hand, takes an
age to boot (just the splash screen) to the point it's nearly unusable. When
it's decided to run, and I load a document, there's a scanning for viruses
message and then eventually the doc loads. CPU and memory look OK while all
this is going on. I've tried running in XP and 2K compatability modes with no
improvement.

PC is AMD 64x2 3800+, 1GB RAM

Any ideas?

Thanks
Steve

Get use to big delays when opening an Office product on Vista. What I think
is there is some malicious code which slows the RPM down to about 1000,
loads the software, then speeds up!

No, just kidding. I have a Dual Core 2.66 GHz machine with 2GB of RAM, and
Office is pretty slow, but it eventually comes up. On my XP box, it just
flies.

I'm running on a older VPR Matrix laptop, circa 2003 with Vista. However,
I find Office and things in general to run 3 times faster than under XP Pro.

What I attribute this to may be the video driver. Since my laptop doesn't
have a WDDM driver (go fig, 4 years old+), I have to use a XDDM
near-version. But Office 2003 and now, Office 2007, zoom on my laptop.

Perhaps throttling down for non-gaming/non-video intensive scenarios might
be a consideration.

This sounds like it may be a configuration setting in your anti-virus
software that is causing a delay?

Do you have Norton AV? I had the same problem and finally figured out that
it was the Norton office plug-in and as soon as I disabled it, Office 2003
started to fly!
