Word 2003: Probs with List Numbering & Headings with Outline Numbe

Hi All,

I'm currently encountering a very frustrating problem with Numbering lists
using the icon. If I start a list in a plain document, the icon works fine,
but as soon as I try it within a document that uses automatically
outline-numbered headings, the list starts as a new Heading. All I want is a
list based on Normal!

Does anyone have any tips on how to get around this?

Many thanks.

It might be that Word is wrongly assuming that when you use numbering, you
really want the Heading style.

One way around this I think I remembered using in Word 2003 is to create a
new style, based on Normal, which has the bulleting. Then name this
something like bullets. This way whenever Word tries to automatically
"correct" styles, it should choose bullets. And if it still does the wrong
thing, you can apply the bullets style to the bulleted list manually.

The Numbering button always applies the most recent numbering used. To get
control over numbering, you will have to link it to paragraph styles (one for
each level).

For single-level numbering, you can use the List Number paragraph style,
which you can apply via the Styles box on the Formatting toolbar.

For multi-level numbering, set it up with a paragraph style for each level;
see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.
