word 2003 as email editor snafu

I am using word 2003 to compose email messages in Outlook 2003. Formatting shows I am in normal formatting, single spacing, but when I hit the return key in the body of my email, it always double spaces. In trying to type an address or a list of items in the body of my emails, each line is double spaced. I've tried everything. Only when I am word wrapping does each line single space

What am I doing wrong? This is driving me nuts

Do you need to have Word as your editor for Outlook?

Disable it.
