Word 2003 - Always save without embedding smart tags

Hi,

For Word 2003, there is a Save option that saves a
document without smart tags embedded to keep the file size
low (Tools > Options > Save tab > untick Embed smart
tags). However, this option only applies to the current
document being saved.

Is there a way to have this option apply to ALL future
documents (i.e. the Embed smart tag option is unticked for
all documents)? I never want to embed the smart tags as I
always want to keep the file size low.

I've tried unticking the option, but whenever I open a new
document and check, the option is ticked again as default!
Urgh! The unticked option doesn't seem to persist.

I've also tried unticking the smart tag checkboxes in the
Autocorrect dialogue (Tools > Autocorrect options > Smart
Tags tab > untick label option and show smart tag action
buttons option). This DOES persist to future documents,
but doesn't seem to make any difference to file sizes (I
did a few experiments). I get the feeling these
are 'hide' options rather than removing the smart tags
(i.e. the smart tag info is still saved, just not shown).

Any help from a passing guru much appreciated,
Stu

Any help greatly appreciated,
Stu
