Word 2003/2007 compatibility

I am thinking about upgrading to Office 2007. Is 2007 both forward and
backward compatible with 2003? I communicate frequently with several persons
who send me Office 2003 documents? Will I be able to make any edits or
changes using 2007 and still have the 2003 user be able to read?

Although Word 2007 uses a new file format, you can read older files and save
both them and new ones you create in the Word 97-2003 file format. Using
that format will disable some of the new features introduced in Word 2007.
