Word 2002 Safe Mode Problem

Guest

I have set up Word 2002 to have a Safe Mode shortcut as per the directions on
the MS Security Advisory # 919637, workarounds section
( http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/919637.mspx)

The problem I have is that the installer routine starts every time I start
the Word Safe Mode shortcut. There is nothing in the Office Safe Mode
limitations list
( http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP030823931033.aspx)
to explain this activity. Can anyone tell me what is going on here, and if
possible, how to make the operation stick without going through that
reinstall every time?

I sure appreciate all the help available in these communities, and look
forward to any responses.

I do know what you are encountering is odd behavior. Perhaps you don't
have the command path correct? Do you get the same result if you hold
Ctrl and start Word? Holding Ctrl is another way to start Word in Safe
Mode.

When I hold 'ctrl' Word starts normally, not in safe mode. Check my shortcut
path to see if it is right, please. I copied & pasted it from the program
properties:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\WINWORD.EXE" /safe

Thanks, and have a great weekend!

You need to keep holding the Ctrl key until you are prompted with "Do
you want to start in Safe Mode".

Your command looks good, I was wondering if you had space before
/safe. Still try the above again and see if you get the same result.
Also, do you have more than one version of Word or Office installed?

Thank you, Beth. I have only one version of Word, and thanks for the tip
about holding down ctrl until the program responds. I did not know that, and
it works, Word will start in safe mode. I can delete that other shortcut
then and not worry about the install running each time. Thanks again!

It's interesting that using the Ctrl key behaved differently than the
/safe switch. That makes me think there may have been an error in the
command. Anyway, I'm glad you have an alternative that is working for
you. :)
