Word 2000 tables change format and won't accept new changes

I am working with multi page tables in Word 2000. they are fomatted for rows to break across pages.

Often while copying or moving text into a cell the table will change its format as follows:
The top of the table moves to the top of the page or even somewhere out of sight above it. And the bottom of the table disappears instead of flowing to the next page.

Once this happens I can't get it to accept any formatting changes and have to delete it and start over.
