WORD 2000 (1) select text and (2) double lines.

I have WINDOWS 2000 as the operating system and Word 2000 presents two
problems:

1) Is there a way to select text "page by page"? Or character by character?
I've been simply holding down the Control key and dragging.

2) I have some odd double lines that appear (I do not know their source) and
they are not subject to normal deletion methods. Selecting above and below the
offending lines, attempting to delete the double lines:

Format/Borders & Shading/Borders
Format/Style - Normal
"Help" is no help.
Neither method worked.

Any help on either item would be appreciated.

1) There are ways to select text character by character or at least word by
word. Look in Word's Help under "Keyboard shortcuts." The ones you want are
under "Editing and moving text and graphics."

2) Does this double line print? If not, could it be a section break? If so,
are you sure it's not a border? See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/CantGetRidOfLine.htm. Another very
pesky line is the "Horizontal Line" inserted from Format | Borders and
Shading or the Tables and Borders toolbar, but I don't think it's ever a
double line--the selection I get is of fancy separator graphics from the
clip art collection.

For item 1, use the Shift key, not the Ctrl key, to extend the
selection as you press the arrow keys or the Page Up/Down keys. Or
click once at the beginning of a large block, use the scroll bar to
bring the other end into view, and hold Shift while you click once at
the end.

For item 2, the lines are paragraph borders, probably created by the
AutoFormat As You Type option. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/CantGetRidOfLine.htm.

I sent a message yesterday on two problems I was having, and have since come up
with two solutions - and are very easy. So if no better, or more elegant
solutions are posted, these will do as temporary fixes:

[Now, as I go to put this into the Newsgroup, I see that the identical solution
for # 1 has been posted, and a most likely solution to # 2 - thanks so much for
the help - that was very fast. Anyway, here is what I came up with}.

1) To quickly select for highlighting: entire pages or entire file, hold down
the Shift key, then use the up or down arrows on right side of Control (NOT
the 12 button 1-9 pad unless Num Lock is OFF) and the highlighting takes place
as the scroll continues up or down.

2) DOUBLE LINES appeared in text. Cause: I think a hidden format code has been
placed in the file and it can't be erased by any of a number of items I tried.
SOLUTION: Open a new, blank WORD file, highlight 5-10 lines above and below
the offending lines and use Ctrl/X, which moves the text (rather than copy),
and go to the new blank file. Use Edit/Special, and will come up with HTML ,
so arrow down to Unformatted Unicode text. This removes the annoying lines in
the blank file; now copy back to the original file, using Edit/Special -
Unformatted Unicode text.

Once again, thanks for the help, and I'll sure look into the other solutions. .
